Reinforcing educational elements through repetition is one of the most effective ways to train the mind and can leave a long-lasting imprint on younger audiences. “Run Eric, Run!” utilizes this method through a game mechanic that spawns advertisements and jumping obstacles that the player must avoid to successfully complete the minigame.

As can be seen in the gif above, the coloured squares represent the advertisements being spawned while the light blue rectangles represent the jumping obstacles. To negate the feeling of repetition, the spawned advertisements are cycled each time they are visible to the player and never spawn more than once in a row.

Part of the polish phase of game production includes ironing out subtle features that have been previously ignored or overlooked by developers. An example of this can be found when incorporating music elements into games. Early phase development can overlook music restarting upon players replaying scenes, which can cause a stuttering feeling that disturbs the immersion within their game. To combat these issues, “Peanut Gallery” implements audio scripts that provide seamless transitions of music between scenes. The above script called “AudioScript” controls which music script must be used within each scene of the game.

DoNotDestroy Script:

In conjunction with the Audio Script, the “DoNotDestroy” scripts handle the audio file that is being played within their respective scene. The script is named after its purpose which is to not be destroyed or to remain in the scene when players exit or restart the minigames. This script is capable of checking for others of its kind and removing itself if required when changing audio files. This is just one way of resolving audio artefacts while other developers may take alternative approaches to accommodate this task.

Playtesting games is one of the most crucial parts of development. During this process, developers aim to ensure that the game runs smoothly and is fun to play and must re-evaluate the product if it does not perform effectively.

Originally “Shooting Gallery” featured one round that consisted of Eric the Elephants trunk moving back and forth with a target at the centre. Playtesting resulted in the decision to expand upon the minigame and in turn formed a foundation for the multi round system. This system extends the length of play and increases the replayability of the minigame through an increase in stakes and progressive difficulty.
